As an  elementary teacher, it will be important for you to know how to design  reading/language arts instructional units that also integrate other subject areas that students are learning about. Books and technology will naturally become key resources and provide you with opportunities to integrate reading with other subject areas (e.g., mathematics, science, social studies, the arts).

Scenario

Imagine you are teaching an elementary reading/language arts class. You have been asked by your school’s literacy coach to develop a reading unit that concentrates on 1 core book or author and integrates technology and 1 other subject area (mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, physical education, or health education). Although your class has only 10 students, their reading levels vary considerably. Some students are avid readers, but there is also a student with dyslexia, a couple of students with decoding difficulties, and a couple of students with poor comprehension skills.

Preparation

Select  an elementary grade level (K–6).

Refer to your Wk 1 Outline: State Reading and English Language Arts Standards assignment. Consider any feedback your faculty member provided.

Choose 1 core book or author to focus your reading unit on.

Assessment Deliverable

Using the information from the Scenario section,  design  a reading/language arts unit for your selected elementary grade level using the prompts in the  Integrated Reading Unit Template . Apply strategies centered on your students’ needs to support their literacy development. Note: Although this template may not reflect a typical unit plan, it is meant to outline the necessary elements required for this assessment.

Ensure you do the following in your unit:

· Use the prompts provided in the template to develop your unit.

· Ensure you include a reading standard and objective for each of the 3 lessons.

· At least 1 of your 3 lessons must integrate a major subject area, including an objective and standard for that subject area.

· At least 1 of your 3 lesson plans must include a pre-reading and post-reading activity.

· If you include the lesson plan you created for your Wk 4 Field Experience: Lesson Plan assignment in this unit, indicate that it is from Week 4 in your template and ensure that it is relative to your unit.

Submit your assessment.
