Comparing the texts A-E
Once you have developed a comprehensive understanding of the point of Saukko's strategies (and the device she uses to bring it across) in "How to Poison the Earth" and written it all out in your notebook, do a similar close reading and paragraph-by-paragraph summary of "Chronicles of Ice" (Ehrlich, p. 243-9).
a) Make a chart of your comparison of the the texts and focus on strategies, objectives and methods.
b) While Saukko's text is tongue-in-cheek but presented as if it were serious, does this make it less serious in intent than Ehrlich's?
c) Determine which of the texts is more effective, as you see it, in calling attention to and articulating a drastic sense of the urgency of the problem of environmental pollution.
d) Using similarities and differences drawn from your comparison to support conclusions you arrive at through this process, compare where reading each text takes your thinking and explain why.
e) Basing your evaluation of these texts on each author's reasoning process and its impact on your thinking, determine which is most effective and explain why.
