book review

After reading your approved book, 100 level students should complete a 2-3 page book review (not including title and author information) that evaluates the book.  You should consider the author’s thesis (what is it and is it well argued/supported), their evidence (what are they using to prove their thesis?  Court cases, newspapers, diaries, first-hand accounts, government files?), their writing, their focus, their believability, as well as bring in some information about the author (PhD in foreign relations?  Reporter?  Witness to the event?)  Is there an interesting quote/map/photo that really adds to the book that you’d like to bring up? Keep in mind 2 pages is considered a “minimum” and may not guarantee an A.  While a quality 2 pages might be able to get an A, depending on the book or your writing style, 2 ½ or 3 pages will probably help you cover the information fully.

Students in level 300 will do the same as 103 students, but the minimum page requirement will be 4-6 pages, and students should also use the text book and a second book on a similar subject to evaluate the literature in one historical area further further.  Would the authors of our textbook agree/disagree with the author of your reading?  Do the two books contradict or add something to your interpretation of one or both?

Caution: Book reviews often exist of the books you will read, but I strongly recommend that you develop your own interpretation of a book before reading a review.  If you get any ideas from a book review, you need to cite the book review.  You should also cite any quotes from your book as well.
