Adolescent Substance Abuse

Background Substance use among adolescents is a public health issue of great concern that affects not only the persons consuming but also the larger community. This paper will investigate the purpose of choosing this topic, how it affects stakeholders and the community, what costs are related to it, and what consequences will occur in the short and long term.

Why I Chose The Topic

The subject of teenage substance use was chosen because of its significant consequences on youth development, mental health, and potential future societal contributions. Brain development is crucial during adolescence, and substance use during this time can result in lasting cognitive deficits and mental health problems (Lees et al., 2020). Substance use is rarely the first attention grabber of society when it comes to young people, even during high-risk times like emerging adulthood. This way, we can offer preventive approaches and focused interventions to the stricken youth, preventing substance use among adolescents.

Other stakeholders involved in your selected issue

Over the years, different stakeholders involved in adolescent substance use, including adolescents themselves, their families, schools, and healthcare providers, have been affected. Substance use has wide-ranging effects on families and can be a source of significant stress to both the individual with an SUD and his or her family members in addition to the heavy financial burden of treating substance abuse (Voutour, 2024), while schools often do not have the resources needed to maintain the structure necessary for identifying and providing treatment for students who carry these exposures. Healthcare systems are also affected by mental health services, and substance use treatment programs must be increased. At a community level, this matters for public safety, educational outcomes and workforce productivity.

Issue Affecting the Community

The costs of these can be high, from collective healthcare expenses to increased juvenile delinquency. Higher crime rates, overburdened healthcare resources, and low academic achievement among youth are just some of the impacts felt by communities as a result of substance use .Substance use and poor mental health often begin with adolescence, growing into adulthood to keep a cycle of addiction and unemployment within the community.

Price of the Issue

The cost to the community of adolescent substance use is high. This encompasses healthcare costs for treating substance use disorders, the expenses of law enforcement resources, and educational, preventative work. Research estimates that annual costs associated solely with underage drinking are over $24 billion .Moreover, substance-related accidents and injuries already put an added burden on emergency services and healthcare providers nationwide, which would ultimately drive up insurance premiums and public healthcare expenditures.

Adolescent substance use also can lead to immediate consequences such as poor judgement, academic failure, and risky behaviors like unsafe sex or driving while impaired (Volkow et al., 2019). Not only does this endanger the individual, but also others in the community. Addiction, mental and physical health such as paranoia or anxiety and depression with possible long-term effect that could lead to criminal activity .Early substance use in adolescence is associated with later struggles to obtain and maintain employment, establishing stable relationships, both at even greater cost to societal resources.

Adolescent substance misuse has numerous risks for both the involved individual and the larger community. This drives up healthcare costs, impacts educational and social outcomes, and takes a huge toll on both physical well-being and mental health. Society can intervene in this issue if it is targeted properly and effectively, like implementing educational programs or community systems that support adolescents away from drugs.
