Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Veterans and Military Personnel

Psychiatric Mental Health Practicum
September 15, 2024
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a complex mental health condition that occurs after exposure to traumatic events, commonly observed in military environments due to the intense stress and life-threatening situations involved. Veterans and active-duty military personnel are particularly vulnerable to PTSD because of their direct participation in combat, exposure to death, and prolonged periods of stress. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reports that 11-20% of veterans from missions such as Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom are impacted by PTSD (Dillon et al., 2020).
Affected Population
Veterans and active-duty military personnel are the primary groups impacted by PTSD. This condition also extends its effects to their families, resulting in emotional and psychological challenges. Spouses and children of those suffering from PTSD may experience heightened stress and difficulties in family dynamics, which can lead to strained relationships and increased risks of domestic violence ((Kelley & Casimir, 2023).
Community Impact
PTSD in veterans has broader implications for the community, often hindering the reintegration of these individuals into civilian life. Veterans with PTSD face challenges such as unemployment, homelessness, substance abuse, and social isolation, leading to increased demands on public health systems and community resources. Furthermore, untreated PTSD contributes to higher healthcare costs, decreased productivity, and elevated suicide risks, placing a strain on healthcare and social services ((McNeely, 2022).
Costs Associated
The economic burden of PTSD is substantial. Direct costs include expenses for psychotherapy, medication, and hospitalization. Indirect costs involve lost productivity and the management of comorbid conditions. The RAND Corporation estimates PTSD treatment costs for the U.S. military at approximately $1,084 per patient per year, which significantly escalates when accounting for indirect costs (Kelley & Casimir, 2023). Veterans who do not receive timely treatment may face unemployment and reliance on disability benefits, amplifying societal costs.
Short-term vs. Long-term Effects
