PERSUASIVE ESSAY

Standing up for freedom of speech requires total commitment in all its aspects. The freedom of speech is a very important docket in a citizen’s life; it grants them full immunity to express their opinions. Nevertheless, when the freedom of speech is used to breach the peace or hurt someone, then it is not freedom of speech but hate speech.

Unregulated speech can cause great harm to the entire society. Freedom of speech is a very important aspect of a human life, but is it more important than a person's dignity? When the freedom of speech hurts other citizens, it is no longer a right but it is offensive. Those people that are offended by the speech can react in a way that can disrupt the peace of the society (Paul, Miller, & Paul, 2004).

People can use the freedom of speech as a weapon to enforce their ideas. The feeling that one’s ideas are better than those of others can result in supremacy and ultimately lead to social conflicts. When freedom of speech is used in ways that bring harm to the society, then it is reason for necessary legal actions to be taken. It is very important for people to take responsibility for their actions. One should be able to live with both the positive and the negative outcomes of their actions.

Every citizen should be accountable for what they say (McGonagle & Donders, 2015). One must be able to live with the possible consequence of the words that they say. Advocating for accountability and responsibility will be the only step through which free speech can be useful. The words that one says should not in any way inflict pain on others. If they do, it is then fair and proper that necessary counter measures be put into place. Even if pain cannot be quantified, the government can evaluate both the physical and the mental pain that a given speech can cause.
