Sacrifice Your Privacy
Did you know that your internet history has already been saved and archived? Privacy is the state or condition of being free from observations or disturbances by other people. Humans for ages have privacy in every aspect of their lives, but in the last decades with the invention of the internet, governments and companies started to invade people privacy. People from different ages started to use the internet and the social media, the more people who use the internet and the social media the more privacy issues becomes a concern. Although invading people privacy can lead to problems like divorces, it ought that it is very useful to track people moves through the internet and social media because it protect us from terror attacks and decrease of the street crimes and it help employers to find the best people to hire; therefore, privacy is something we must sacrifice in order to participate in today’s world.
The internet built a network for people to communicate faster and in an easy way than any other method of communication. Following what people do on the internet can help government and military track information about terror attacks and this will protect the society and the world from criminals. Many terrorist attacks have been prevented by the use of internet and without internet several terror attacks could have not been prevented. In the article “ Terrorists and the Internet “ by Eben Kaplan , Kaplan states that with internet it is easy to find terrorists , and it also help the US government and military to find al-Qaeda members by tracking there location to know where they are .
Installing several surveillance cameras around the neighborhoods and the streets creates safer and more effective streets. Public surveillance cameras provide us with video recording with the incident we need and can be reviewed many times as much as you need. The wide variety of cameras around the streets help the police to catch criminals with footage evidence .In the article “Chicago's Camera Network Is Everywhere “ the writer mention that the city of Chicago has installed more than 1500 cameras that linked with police around the city to decrease the numbers of crimes in Chicago . And also mentioned in the article is that a police spokesman said that installing 1500 cameras around the city of Chicago has "aided in thousands of arrests.”. For example, the cameras around the city caught footage of one of the Chicago gang member shooting fire on a bus, the video was used as evidence and the evidence led the gang member to 100 years imprisonment.
Browsing people profiles on social media websites has never been easier than the period we are in right now. By browsing people profiles you can know where the person lives, his/her age, favorite actor and favorite team. All that information you can get it by just one click in your computer or mobile device. In the last ten years, employers started to check the applicants’ profiles on social media to decide whether they will hire this person or not. In “ Employers Use Social Networks to Check Out Applicants “ showed that photos is the most biggest factor in hiring decision followed by drinking and drug use . Other stuffs that the employers check are the online communication skills and that’s hurt many people in hiring decisions. The most popular website that employers check their applicants profiles are Facebook followed by LinkedIn. Many companies started to follow this method and it worked well by the help of the internet and social media.
On the other hand, there are many people against privacy sacrificial and they think we should not sacrifice it because it’s leading us to bigger problems. In their point of view they think that the governments are doing illegal activities by accessing all of our personal information and our phone records. They also think that people rights should be always decided by the people themselves not the government and small corporations. However, tracking people phone calls and recorders would prevent us from many terror attacks, in the past for example 9/11 , this threat is bigger than our privacy because we are losing people when we deny our privacy access . People should see the pros and cons for every subject that impact our society and in this subject I think that the pros of sacrificing our privacy are more than cons, and that’s what we want, to make people life better and easier than ever.
At the end, People need not to worry about their personal privacy and information because it benefits us more in many ways and aspects. Providing our personal information and privacy are used in good way to help us. Losing privacy nowadays is different because it is for our own good to protect us from terror attacks and decrease of the street crimes and it help employers to find the best people to hire. We need to sacrifice our privacy to participate in today’s world, have safer and a better life.
Every country has a role to protect its citizens from all sorts of insecurity including the terrorist attacks, even if it will cost us sacrificing our freedom for this then let it be. However, not every individual will be comfortable when it comes to giving up their freedom for security reasons, individuals who oppose this claims that their freedom is something sententious which their forefather fought for in the colonial periods and by giving up their freedoms will be like betraying those who fought for this freedom. What is the essence of protecting lives yet you can’t live free, and that’s how some individuals argue. I totally feel this is wrong and protecting our lives should be the first priority, sacrificing our privacy even if it’s our internet freedom let it be. From the “terrorists and the internet article”. It is well stated that terrorists are currently carrying most of their activities in the social media, they use internet as a means of communication with one another and the rest of the world. Therefore if our internet privacy is limited in order to prevent and get the information spread by the terrorist, then it is for good reason that every individual should support.
Our security should only be sacrificed for good reasons such as security purposes but not any other reason less than protecting lives, so far technological discoveries have worked to ensure the level of our anonymity privacy is reduced (Chesterman, 2011). For instance surveillance cameras which have been increasingly installed in every city that can disclose every individuals face and according to the article “Chicago’s Camera Everywhere”, giant web video-surveillance cameras have spread all over Chicago including business premises, streets and homes. However, Charles Yohnka the director of communications and public policy for the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois feels that this is too much and when will it stop because this is extra invasion of people’s privacy and freedom. In addition, cell phone tracks, buying habits transmitted by computer cookies are all invasion of people’s privacy and yet they are not for good intentions to secure people from all sorts of insecurity (Rules, 2010). According to the article “Invading our own Privacy”. It points out an argument obtained from the New York magazine that every individual despite their age are susceptible to these intrusive technologies. People who are at their twenties are the most worried about how and why their privacy is being watched; therefore privacy should only be sacrificed for good reasons.
