Ophelia and William Manchin are a black family from the plantation belt of Mississippi, currently sharecropping on the land of a white cotton farmer. They were young children during the Civil War, so technically they were born in slavery. Their kids were born in the 1870s and 1880s, and a couple died as infants or young children.

Many greetings from family and friends back here at home. We are doing very well and so I do hope the same case is with you and your family. I was very thrilled to know your progress and how you have managed to establish yourself after you left us. Even though we have been apart from each other for such a long time, I thought it wise I update you on the developments which have taken place especially on some of the facets of life which you were very much inclined to. More than that, I would also be happy to let you know some more other developments which have transformed our lives and much more to the better well-being of all individuals in the society.

Just before a decade elapsed after you relocated, am pretty sure you can remember how the market was, the condition was very miserable as most of the business men were out to exploit us with poor marketing traits and even the nature of business which was carried out just worsened our already miserable lifestyle. The much slavery we were exposed to harshly affect us and its one of the major reasons which you had to relocate to go and seek for better place where you could settle with your family. That’s so sad you had to leave us but good news! We are no longer exposed to the slavery and hard labor and the living conditions have substantially improved with introduction of social amenities and healthcare facilities being in the limelight of the changes we are experiencing currently.

After the civil war which in the late 1800, the nation engaged in a reconstruction process which saw the rise of many industries even beyond what we could comprehend. This was the initial move which shed light in our lives as we were able to move from the plantations to industries. This has greatly transformed our lives as introduction of industries has led to reduction of slaved labor. We are now able to work normal working hours with substantial pay as compared to those times we used to when working in plantations. This came as great news to us aspiring for upcoming entrepreneurs and also business people.

I am pretty sure that you will be impressed to hear how the music and theater industry have heavily influenced the education sector. Travelling entertainment which was very popular has taken a notch higher with integration of part of it to education. This has greatly changed the face of the education sector as students could now be able to not only have mental picture but also physically experience the real happenings outside the class. There has been emergence of new and interesting shows which have captured the attention of many as shows have proved to be pivotal in instilling morals in the society. Apart from that, the shows have proved to be an interesting and effective platform where they could be used to criticize any social vice like corruption and poor leadership.

Taking a specific case is one of your favorite shows by the name Chautauqua which currently has been blended with education. You can imagine how interesting education has become back here at home. Most of the students have improved their performance due to introduction of these new modes of training where students can now fully be engaged in the learning process. Apart from the academic development, they have been able to develop their talents which have now shifted the attention from books but integration with other factors which can positively enhance learning standards in the region. Presently, the current literacy levels have shoot up and almost every household has a child who has gone up to college levels in the education sector. The state hubs bright minds which are ready to bring the change we want in the society.

Also, in the health sector, you can remember the mortality state was at our time to the extent of losing even our brothers and sisters. We grew up in very deplorable times and to some extend we can say that we were very lucky to survive. Due to great leaders who we opted to put forward to lead us, they brought massive developments among them being health sector where the state of amenities was greatly developed. I greatly appreciate the positive move of our leaders as the mortality has gone down by more than fifty percent. This has further been advanced by the improved social services provided to the public and we greatly brag of the new improved living standards.

Market state and physical developments were just but mere illustrations of what is out to be. I am happy to let you know that the current developments which have taken place are overwhelming and new face of the market place and infrastructure at large. Our cities have an awesome looks with street lighting which gloom the city during the night. The tarmacking and structural improvements which are underway are sure sign of a great and promising future our city is. This is together with structural developments and skyrocketing building which have put up to set a new business enabling environment. Am sure if you take a trip and come to visit us you will be greatly impressed to even an extent of wanting to relocate back here at home again.

Lastly on the plantations, the hard labor which was got from us poor slaves proved to be a basic foundation to the real us today. This is because through the torture which we faced, we learned quite a lot even though the plantations have changed the way they were treating their workers. They have improvised most of their farming activities hence reducing the number of manual labor which were involved in their operations. This have further resulted in the improvement of the productivity levels of the plantations and with this; food has become easily accessible at affordable rates by the common citizen.

I am so sure you will be very glad to note these advancements our nation has taken and in contrast to those times when you left us, they can intrigue you to even consider joining us back again. We are at peace with the current developments and unlike in the past we can comfortably enjoy the fruits of our sweat. I encourage you to be more aggressive in pursuing your dreams and don’t forget to pass our regards to the family and friends back there.

I was deeply moved to choose this family because tracing their background and their story of how they lost their young ones due to poor health services its very moving. Furthermore, the stories of how they were being mistreated in the white farms plantation are interesting while at the same time moving. While we get to know how they learned from the entire process, its saddening at the same time to hear how they were being poorly treated as if they did not deserve to live. Due to that, I had keen interest in knowing how they came about to overcome the challenges and live positively later in life.
