When one mentions a party what immediately feels our mind is loud music, alcohol, various mouthwatering delicacies, dancing and what have you. Well, I can’t refute the fact that that is what a really party entails but you will agree with me that there can be a party not lacking fun with all the music, drugs, alcohol and food missing. That is exactly what happened at my home when the national results came out and the great, big good news was that I had made it to the university. When the news reached us, the whole compound went crazy, I can still remember the day vividly, my mum was singing and dancing as she went round the compound, my dad sited under a shade and making several calls one after the other delivering the good news, my brothers and sisters though calm and not going crazy with my mum and dad, I could see it how they all looked at me, my sisters their eyes filled with tears of joy and my brothers giving me that look that says that is how you roll…. That was my party! After the merriment and the dancing and singing and constant beeping of the phone for a couple of days, the mood calmed down, and immediately my family sat down to deliberate on the next move. Whatever was discussed that day by my family behind the rolled down curtains yielded enough results, and everything was agreed upon, here I am, my first day on a campus. Well, if you are wondering, I didn’t teleport myself here, and I am not alone either. I came with my dad and the journey was long so we had to wake up very early in the morning so as to make it in time for registration and acquisition of a room for my accommodation for the next couple of months that I am going to be on campus. I dare say the journey was rather longer than usually. Well what do you expect, with the emotions running high, the expectations, excitement mixed with the fear of the unknown can yield an excellent concoction that seems to have the magic of making time stand still or rather make a minute be several seconds longer. After a couple of hours the long wait was finally over and finally we arrived. When my eyes first beheld the scenery, there seemed to be a lot to take in, the buildings, the number of people walking in various directions, it was amazing and somehow satisfied my perceptions about what was ahead of me. The registration and accommodation were over within no time, and I was in my room and a new friend, when my new friend and roommate got to give me an overview of what to expect in the coming days, the revelations threatened and totally changed my views and perceptions on campus. Before his blindfold removing revelations, I always perceived and thought highly of university students and its environs. Don’t get me wrong, though, it is but not lacking in the various social misfits of the world. This though might sound reasonable but it is not because most if not every institution worldwide only admit students of the highest caliber with excellent brain pedigree hence are expected to behave in a manner that will reflect their mental capability. Having performed well and proved their mental ability on the previous level of learning, the campus student is expected to be a distinguished individual, refined over the various stages of learning. Surprisingly this is not the case, the students in school behave immaturely and act carelessly as you would expect ignorant people to. The students party all day all night week in week out some even either going to the examination drunk or totally missing the test just because they were out drinking the day prior to the examination. The students involve themselves in risky sexual behavior with multiple partners and often get unwanted pregnancies that they abort. My roommate narrated for me painfully how one day they woke up to a horror show of almost fully grown fetus which was found at the dumping site. As saddening as it sounds, the situation is alarming since people talk about creating awareness so as to overcome some social evils, but here is a people who are educated with high potential doing things with great disregard of what dangers it portends. So much for the leaders of tomorrow huh? Call me naive or a conservative but are not these the things that we are supposed to be educated so as to fight against? How then will we fight HIV and AIDs and other sexually transmitted diseases, stop liver cirrhosis and lung cancer if the people that have the chance to learn and explore how these conditions are affecting various economies and destroying lives are not able to practice self-control and reduce their spread? On the contrary, they are the ones, in fact, aiding the faster spread of the diseases, where will our help come from then? As these thoughts lingered through my mind, my roommate apparently had realized that I was taken aback by what he was telling me, then he said something that made me determined more than ever not to fall prey of the campus lifestyle that is swaying many,” my brother, don’t worry because it won’t be long before you join the pack” as the plain words fell on my ears, that very moment I made a promise to myself. After unpacking as my roommate gave me an update on what has been happening on campus, who is who and the campus calendar, we finally left for a stroll in the campus premises to capture to location of the various amenities that we come in handy when I finally commence my studies. As we walked by, in my mind I kept contemplating on how many students come to the university as innocent as I am, charged with the responsibility of learning with so many destinies of parents, sisters, brothers and even children attached to theirs but destroy the many dreams along with theirs? Well, I can’t tell because nobody keeps the statistics, behold my promise still stands and if am going to keep it only time will tell………
