What is a profile essay? A profile essay (discussed in Chapter 3) is an opportunity to write about a place, an activity, a person, or a group of people. Axelrod and Cooper (61-64) consider the following to be basic features of the profile essay:
* Specific information about the subject
* A clear, logical organizational plan
* The writer’s role in relation to the subject
* A perspective – the main idea or cultural significance – on the subject
Guidelines/Topic:
Write an essay about a person, a group of people, a place, or an activity. It is acceptable to use a first person (me/myself/I) point of view. Draw upon a specific memory: An important or influential person in your life (a family member, a coach, a mentor, a favorite teacher); a team or group (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, baseball or basketball or football team, school orchestra, church choir, the military); a “first day” (first day of kindergarten, first grade, high school, etc. or first day at a new job). Focus on giving a detailed snapshot or profile with sensory details (see, hear, smell, touch, taste). Include an introduction, 3-6 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Indent new paragraphs, use complete sentences, use spell check, and proofread for grammar and punctuation.
Length: 3 pages typed, double-spaced 12-point Times New Roman text.
