Chapter 6

4.  Yes, I think it makes sense for a transnational organization to have more than one headquarters.  As Daft states, “the transnational model addresses these challenges by creating an integrated network of individual operations that are linked together to achieve the multidimensional goals of an organization” (2016, p.244).

Some advantages to having two headquarters would be assets and resources dispersed worldwide, flexible structures, subsidiary managers create strategy and innovations for the whole corporation, and unification and coordination are achieved through corporate culture (Daft, 2016, p. 244-245).

Some drawbacks to a transnational organization would be labor exploitation, removal of capital, economic recession, outflow of wealth, outside decision making, and widening the gap between developed and developing countries (Essays, UK 2013).

7.  Some of the elements that contribute to greater complexity for international organizations are the company may not be aware of the local culture, the company may face difficult from language barriers, government regulations, infrastructure, cultural norms and values, and the political system, it may be difficult for a company to coordinate and allocate resources (Course Hero, n.d.).

I think some of these elements may apply to companies like Spotify but not all.  For example, the language barrier may be an issue, any government regulations, and cultural norms and values.

8.  If a company were to open a division in Mexico without being trained on these new values beforehand I would predict that the company would fail.  A lot of American companies are used to operating on these divisions of guidelines, rules, and structures so individuals need to be trained on the shared power and authority aspect before just throwing them into the division or they will be setting themselves up for failure before the company even starts operating probably.

9.  I think it is possible for a global company to achieve the goals of global efficiency, integration, national responsiveness and flexibility, and the worldwide transfer of knowledge and innovation but it may take years to reach this point.  I feel like they have to work on each aspect separately until they are achieved which is not impossible but may take a while.

Chapter 10

1.   I think technology for social business will definitely enhance the ability for top managers to do their jobs with little face to face communication but I do not think it will ever replace it completely.  We still have a lot of old school managers out there who prefer face to face communication over using technological advances such as Skype or Facetime.  Also I think it is more professional to use face to face communication when possible in order for other workers to take you seriously.

7. Knowledge management is important for a company that wants to learn and change continuously rather than operate at a stable state because “it is the efforts to systematically find, organize, and make available a company’s intellectual capital and to foster a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing” (Daft, 2016, p.319).

9. Social media can be used to develop more trusting relationships between management and employees through company pages or blogs.  These are normally private platforms a company can create that only members of the job can post on and share common knowledge or just something funny for the group.  It can build trust between management and employees through the more stuff they post and how much they interact on the page.  Between a company and its customers it is a good place to post any deals the company may be having or if their hours are changing.  For example, for a lot of my favorite businesses I always go and “like” their facebook page solely for the fact that I can figure out the best days of the week to go for deals or any menu changes or sales they may be having.

10.The application of advanced IT typically leads to greater decentralization in an organization because information that had been previously available to only top managers can be easily shared throughout the organization no matter the geographical distance between them (Daft, 2016, p.331).

It could be used for greater centralization because it improves communication across firms, enhances the network structure, and can lead to smaller organizations (Daft, 2016, p.331-332).
