Write a peer response
Prompt: Write a response in which you comment on a descriptive line or two from one of the poems. Which images seem especially vivid to you? How do they contribute to the poem's meaning?
David Bastien
The poem I choose was "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time", by Robert Herrick. The poem in a sense is relatively straightforward with the message its trying to get across. The virginity of a young women seems to be the main focal point with uses of imagery to better convey it. The lines which images seems more vivid to me are lines 3-4 " And this same flower that smiles today, Tomorrow will be dying". The author is using the flower as a metaphor for a womens life with even though it may be elegant, and beautiful today it can still end suddenly somehow. So by including that it brings up how the author sees the importance of a womens virginity on comparing it to the flower. It contributes to the authors main point that young women should make use of their youth by taking advantage of it to enjoy life to the fullest because once its over you wouldn't be able to get back those times you've once had ever again since the glow, and beauty of youth fades away with age.
