In this assignment, your task is to focus solely on biological determinants. While not nearly as common as social determinants, biological determinants can have a major impact on an individual's quality of life. In the directions that follow, you will pair a biological determinant with a selected biological theory from the Instructor Guidance to demonstrate several real-world public health actions. This  is divided into two parts.

Part 1

  • Choose one of the biological science theories identified in the Week 3 Instructor Guidance (Evolution, Cell, or Genetics).
  • Choose one biological determinant of health, and it cannot be the same as you shared in the Global Determinants discussion forum from Week 3.
  • Choose one social determinant of health, and it cannot be one you have shared previously.
  • Compare and contrast the relationship between your selected social determinant and the chosen biological determinant of health.
  • Determine how your findings interrelate with the biological science theory you chose from the Instructor Guidance.
  • Hypothesize how communicable diseases (malaria, polio, COVID, and so forth) can affect your chosen biological determinant.

Part 2

Write an evaluation that considers and addresses the following:

  • Explain the social implications of using biological science theories in public health interventions. What are the pros and cons? Use scholarly or government research to support your reasoning.
  • Assess the relationship between biological science theories and biological determinants of health. Use scholarly research to support your reasoning.
  • Explain how biological science theories at the national and international levels address biological determinants of health. Use scholarly research to support your reasoning.
  • Compare and contrast a real-world biological determinants public health intervention and a real-world social determinants public health intervention.
  • Determine why public health interventions often overlook biological determinants and biological theories when compared with social determinants.
    • How do the interventions vary?
      • Consider the possible social and political factors involved.
