cuShare your research question and hypothesis in this discussion. Then, given the data-collection constraints inherent in this course, identify challenges to collecting data on your research question. How can you remedy these challenges? How might you modify your research proposal to account for these limitations and make your research proposal achievable?

When responding to your classmates, offer suggestions for how they can address the challenges they have identified.

Hi everyone!

I hope everyone enjoyed their week break between terms! My name is Caitlin O'Leary and this is my third graduate class at SNHU. I completed my undergraduate degree in 2021 majoring in psychology concentrating in addiction studies. Currently, I am majoring in psychology with a concentration in forensic science. I work for the Department of Children and Families and my best friend moved onto my street a year ago so our families have been spending any free time we have together!

For my research proposal, my hypothesis is that the amount of screen time does impact sleep duration or the amount of screen time does not impact sleep duration. With the COVID pandemic, so many people were forced to increase their screen time, between less social activities, remote work/school, and more time spent indoors. With the growing use of technological devices, it could be possible that the sleep quality of a person is affected by the amount of screen time that person uses during waking hours. Would decreasing screen time increase the amount of sleep a person gets?

I believe the biggest challenge I face with this topic is the inability to compare how sleep is impacted based on different quantities of screen use, due to the fact that my peers will only be able to take this survey once. I am considering asking questions related to screen time and sleep pre-COVID and post-COVID. I also want to be mindful of diagnosed sleep conditions. If a participants have a history of sleep disturbances, such as sleep-walking or insomnia, I want clarify before the survey is taken that if a person has a diagnosed sleep condition, this survey would not be appropriate. I don't believe that will limit the amount of people that would be qualified to take the survey. Any feedback will be highly appreciated! Good luck to everyone this term!

Hey there! I’m Haley Chambers. This is my second term at SNHU. I am working on my master’s in psychology with a focus in Childhood Development. My research topic for PSY 510 focused on how different parenting styles in childhood effects social aspects in adulthood. There are four parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved. I have 3 hypotheses, (1) is Authoritarian parenting style better for a child in development than Authoritative or Permissive? (2) does Authoritative parenting style create less autonomy for a child compared to Authoritarian and Permissive? And (3) does Permissive style parenting create more independence then compared to Authoritative and Authoritarian parenting styles?

I went with more than one hypothesis because the overall question would have been too broad, and more information needed to be collected to see these variables next to each other. In that being able to use an independent samples t-test when analyzing the data. I took into consideration the limits to getting these answers questioned like low reliance on memory, depending on the age group along with the parents. There are also possible triggers to unlock memories that were purposefully being suppressed from certain home lives as children. With having available hotlines and resources that could help individuals if this were to happen is very important in this study. I have also chosen to not include the uninvolved parenting style for these reasons. Of course, every parenting style has its strengths and weaknesses along with the “title” of those that were in the role of a parent even though they may not be specifically Mom and Dad; like Aunt and Uncle, Grandparents, Foster parents, Stepparents, etc. There is no specification to the parenting style, for example, “From Mom and Dad”, but the verbiage is “Parenting style used in the household from parental figures”.
