Virtual Tour

Project due via Turn-It-In on Tuesday Nov 14 at midnight. Late submissions will incur a grade reduction. See below.

Research and find an online or video plant tour that interests you, See the reference list for ideas. You may choose your own if there is another company/product/service that interests you.

Take the online tour and complete the following questions:

  1. What company did you tour?      Describe their products/services and other relevant information.

  1. What were the (low value)      inputs, describe the transformation process, and describe the (high value)      outputs. (Ch 1)

  1. Would you judge the company to      be a Product Innovator or Product Imitator? Describe the factors that led you to      reach this conclusion. (Ch 2)

  1. How would you describe the process: Continuous, Assembly Line, Batch, Job      Shop or Project? Describe why you picked this. What process characteristics did you observe      that led you to this conclusion? (Ch 4 – 5)

  1. Using the ‘Insert’ ‘Shapes’ function on MS Word, draw a high-level process      flow chart (approx. 10-15 steps) for the production process (Ch 6)

  1. What Lean concepts were      demonstrated in this video? Also,      what opportunities did you did you identify to apply Lean      Manufacturing/Lean Thinking concepts in their operation? (Ch 7)

  1. What was the most interesting      part of the online tour?

  1. What surprised you about the      process, product or company?

General Requirements:

  1. While      you will not be held to a particular number of pages, I anticipate      approximately 8-10 written pages of well thought out material. Process flow charts and other visual      tools will make up a portion of this project.
  2. Where      applicable, cite all resources (APA or MLA style)! You will be penalized for not citing      others’ writings or concepts—whether you quote them directly or      summarize. Note      as well that much of this paper is based on your own direct observation      and interpretation.
  3. The      final project will be due by midnight      on Nov 14 (reading day). One      letter grade will be deducted for each day late. A zero (-0-) will be      assigned if not received by midnight, Nov 16.
