1). Native Americans played a key role in shaping the geopolitics of European and U.S. empires, but their position changed through the nineteenth century. Drawing from both lectures and readings, analyze how Native American nations negotiated with and confronted other powers. How would you explain the shifting outcomes of these contacts?  

2). How and why did colonial societies with slaves become slave societies? Your answer should explain the defining elements of each society.

3). To what extent did women’s power increase from the War of Independence through the nineteenth century?  

4). How and why did slavery expand in the United States during the nineteenth century? 

5). How were hierarchies of race and gender simultaneously challenged and reconsolidated during Reconstruction? (1865-1877).
