The book thief

Read pages 3-15 of The Book Thief and answer the following questions:

1. Who is the narrator of the novel?  In what way does the author's use of this particular narrator set the tone for the novel; in other words, what kind of atmosphere does this narrator create?
2. Three of the first four short sections of the novel are each associated with a color: white, black, and red.  What do these colors represent within the context of the novel?
3. What additional ideas or considerations can you add regarding this first section of the novel?
