Week 6 Assignment
For this assignment you will use the Week_06_Assignment_Data.csv file, which can be found on the Week 6 Assignment page in Canvas. This is a hypothetical dataset. Assume these data were collected from a representative sample of students recently admitted to a bachelor’s degree program at one large online university.
The dataset includes the following variables:
· Student_ID : A unique nominal-level identification number assigned to each student
· Admit_Status: Whether the student was admitted as a first-year student (FYR) or transfer student (TRN)
· Age : Student’s self-reported age in years
· FirstGen: Whether the student self-reported being a first-generation college student (Y) or not a first-generation college student (N)
· Primary_Degree: Whether the student’s primary degree is a Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), or Bachelor of Science (BS)
Criteria:
· Use JASP to compute descriptive statistics and to construct graphs
· Interpret descriptive statistics and graphs in relation to the assumptions of an inferential test
· Write hypothesis statements for a given scenario
· Use JASP to conduct an inferential statistical analysis
· Interpret the statistical significance of a hypothesis test
· Summarize the results of a hypothesis test in APA style
Scenario: The admissions office at a large online university wants to know if students admitted to their bachelor’s degrees program as first-year students (FYR) and transfer students (TRN) differ in terms of their ages.
In JASP, compute descriptive statistics (i.e., sample size, mean, and standard deviation) and construct histograms of the Age variable split by Admit_Status. |
[Include screenshots of your descriptive statistics table and histograms here] |
Explain why a Welch t test is an appropriate analysis to conduct using these data to address the admissions office’s research question. |
Write the null and alternative hypotheses that you will test to address the admissions office’s research question. You may use statistical notation, or you may write out the hypotheses in words. |

In JASP, conduct a Welch t test to determine if there is evidence that the mean ages of first-year students and transfer students are different in this population. Include the 95% confidence interval for the difference in means and include Cohen’s d as a measure of effect size. |
[Include a screenshot of your JASP output here] |
Is there evidence that the mean ages of first-year and transfer students are different in this population? Explain how you determined this. |
Write a paragraph summarizing the results of your analysis in APA style. Include the following: group-level sample sizes, group-level means, group-level standard deviations, t test statistic, degrees of freedom, p value, 95% confidence interval for the mean difference, and Cohen’s d. Your write-up should explicitly state whether the test was statistically significant. |
