Speech script written
One of the hardest things to learn as a PR writer is how to write using someone else's voice, but once you master the task, an entire world of career opportunities opens up for you.
Let's imagine the Mayborn School of Journalism and UNT College of Business are hosting a seminar for small businesses on Saturday, Oct. 27. Fifty people have signed up for the event, and they include the owners of mom-and-pop restaurants, retail boutiques, art galleries, hair salons and computer repair shops. Nearly all of the businesses are less than a year old.
Professor Keller has been asked to deliver a 20-minute presentation on how small businesses can best use PR, but she's swamped and asks you to choose the topic, write the speech and prepare visual aids. (You are free to choose any topic related to public relations and small businesses.) A 15-minute question and answer session will follow her presentation.
In addition to Keller, other speakers at the event will also be delivering 20-minute presentations followed by question-and-answer sessions. They are:
- The president of the Denton Chamber of Commerce discussing the benefits of joining the organization
- An accounting professor discussing new tax laws
- A business professor discussing cloud storage for business computer systems
- A management professor discussing best practices in hiring and employee management
Your assignment (3 parts)
1. Create a memo (see format in Canvas) to Professor Keller that provides information on:
- The best location on campus that can accommodate the seminar. The location must have tables and comfortable seating for 50 guests, a place for a breakfast/lunch buffet table, and a computer and screen for presenters. Embed a photo of the room and specify the building and room number.
- The best place for guests to park near the location. Provide the lot number/name and location.
- The event's agenda. Specify when each presentation takes place. Include time for registration, breakfast, lunch and breaks. (See template in Canvas.)
- Upload this as a separate doc or docx file. Name it "yourlastname_speech memo." Memo is worth 25 points.
- Research your topic and prepare the speech. Write to accommodate Professor Keller's voice, mannerisms and style. Share information that is relevant and important to the seminar's audience.
- The speech must run 20 minutes, which equates to roughly 2,500 words. (The average person can speak 120-150 words per minute.) You may show ONE video clip, but it must be less than 60 seconds. (If you use a clip, you must include the YouTube link in your slides. The clip must be public domain and free of copyright restrictions.)
- Include cues and stage directions in the script. Remember, these are written in parentheses.
- A real script would be triple- spaced with a larger than average font so that it would be easy for the speaker to read. In addition, a real speech would also cover only the first 2/3 or the page. However, in the interest of saving paper, please use 11.5 Times New Roman font, double-space your text and use the full sheet.
- Upload this as a separate doc or docx file. Name it "yourlastname_speechscript." Speech is worth 100 points.
