Task: To complete this task you will need to:

  • Play the game of Twisted Monopoly as a player for the two class sessions. 
  • Write a short paper about your experience in the game. 
  • The paper should include, but is not limited to, the following:
    • State what player you played.
    • What is the significance of the colors in the game?
    • What is the significance of gender in the game?
    • What limitations were there in the game?
    • What was the intention of the game? What was the game designed to represent? 
    • Was everyone equally motivated to win the game? Why?
    • Who won the game? Why do you think they won the game?
    • Who lost the game? Why did they lose, was it because they were less skilled and/or motivated?
    • How well did you fair in the game, or not? Why do you think this is?
    • Did the rich get richer and the poorer get poorer? Why or why not?
    • What general patterns did you observe in the game? 
      • For example, did one player begin to control the game? Why do you think this happened? If no one controlled the game why do you think no one took over?
      • What interactions between players did you begin to notice? Did players begin to play as their "character" in the game? How? What led you to believe this? 
      • Did you begin to play as you believe your "character" would play? 
    • How did you feel playing the game as the "character"? Did it affect your ability to play? How? Why?
    • How does the simulation contribute to your understanding of sociology?
    • Is the system of social class experienced in this game based more on the theories of Karl Marx or Max Weber? How would Marx and Weber defend Twisted Monopoly? How would they critique Twisted Monopoly?
  • Your paper should be at least 600 words - about 2 pages long. Double-spaced, using a 12-point font and a 1 inch margin. It must be a word document.
