The World Economic Forum publishes an annual Global Competitiveness Report. It is attached.

The 2018 report includes 140 countries. Rankings of the countries are found in The Global Competitiveness Index 4.0 2018 Rankings on page xi of the 2018 report.

Choose 10 high-ranking countries (those in the left column) and 10 low-ranking countries (those in the right column). 

Profiles of each of the 140 countries begin on page 55. Organized Crime is indicator 1.01.  Find the values for organized crime for each of the countries you have chosen. Note that the lower the value, the more problematic organized crime is. Although this is one factor of many, do you find a relationship between the overall ranking and the organized crime value? 

Social capital (a broad measure that tries to capture the quality or personal and social relationships, the strength of social norms, and the level of civic participation within society) is indicator 1.05.  Do you see a relationship between social capital and organized crime?  What is it?  Does that square with Durkheim’s thoughts about crime and suicide increase with social dislocation and disruption?Lastly, choose one other variable of interest and look at its relationship.  Use your sociological imagination to explain any relationship you find.
