1. Conceptual Comparison: What are the similarities and differences between the following four concepts: cultural competence, cultural humility, cultural awareness, and cultural responsiveness. Assume that you are working with Wasuda, a client who identifies as Blind and Kenyan. Wasuda has asked you to help her with parenting skills. She has a 5-year-old daughter that she describes as rambunctious. How would you apply the four cultural concepts to your work with Wasuda? 

2. Violations: Explain how the social worker in each of the following situations violates the principles of cultural awareness and responsiveness. Identify whether the violation is an example of demonstrating disrespect, ignoring culture, imposing values or beliefs, or using culturally inappropriate assessments or interventions. a. Violet comes from an individualistic culture. She tells a client from a communitarian culture that it is abnormal for parents to expect their children to live at home until they are married.b. Dietrich uses a lot of paraphrasing and reflection of feeling to show empathy and build trust with an Indigenous (Native American) client. Within the client’s cultural frame, it is more appropriate to demonstrate listening through silence rather than through restating what the person has just said.

3. Self-Disclosure: Identify the potential benefits and risks of self-disclosure in the following situations.a. A social worker who facilitates grief and loss groups lets members know that he believes in reincarnation, suggesting this belief system can help them with the mourning process.b. A research participant asks a social worker who is interviewing him (for a study on discrimination) whether she has experienced discrimination. The worker describes how teachers belittled her because of her race.

4. Conversations: Assume that you are counseling a teenaged girl via videoconferencing. The teenager’s father, Mr. Kawai, has been listening to some of your conversations with her. He calls you one day and says he would like to hire you to be the human resources officer in a large business that he owns. You are tempted to accept the job offer as it pays very well and you find human resources work very interesting. What sections of the NASW Code should you consider as you decide how to respond? What specifically would you say to Mr. Kawai?

5. Eligibility Dilemma: You have been working with a client, Mikayla, who is aging out of the foster care system. She would like to continue to work with you; you would also like to continue to work with her, despite the agency’s age restrictions. Mikayla has a history of abuse and abandonment. She finds it difficult to end relationships or start new ones. You think it would be in Mikayla’s best interests to continue to work with her. What options should you and Mikayla consider? What are your ethical obligations to your client and your ethical obligations to your agency? How should you balance these obligations if they conflict? Under what circumstances, if any, might you consider working with Mikayla even if it goes against agency policy?
