Reading Center Assignment

This assignment will allow you to design a reading center for an elementary school classroom.

This assignment fulfills

• Module Outcome 4: You will have demonstrated the importance motivation plays, in reading, by developing a classroom reading center.
• Course Outcome 3:You will have planned developmentally appropriate experiences, interaction techniques and environments that are sensitive to and meet the individual needs of all children and families with differing backgrounds, i.e. (linguistic, culture, geographic, ethnic, and socioeconomic) (2a, 4b, 4c)
• General Education Competency:  You will have used critical thinking to analyze problems and make logical decisions.

The Assignment

Utilize a classroom space to design a reading center that will encourage your students to read. Provide a description of the center and where it will be located in the classroom. (The more creativity you include, the more the students will want to be there!)  List at least 5 types of reading materials, with a description, that your center will contain. What other items will be incorporated into the center?  furniture, materials, etc.  After you describe your center, include a one paragraph (7-10 sentences) descirption of your rationale for the center. (some examples: how will you use the center to keep your students motivated to read?  When and how often will they have access to the center?) 

Grading Criteria

Included in the assignment should be

• A thorough description of the center with location listed. 
• At least 5 types of reading material (and any other items included).
• Ideas/strategies on motivating students to read by using the reading center.
• Spelling and grammar will be checked also..
