FINAL ESSAY PROMPT
In an analytical essay of 1,500-2,000 words (about five to seven pages, typed, doublespaced, 1 margins, 12-point font), develop an argument/interpretation about any of
the pieces of literature we read this term. This essay should have a clear thesis
statement, and the evidence used to support the argument should come from close
reading of the text/s involved.

Your essay should have a thesis statement. A good thesis statement:
takes a clear, arguable position
hints at the reasons that support it
is the proper scope for the length of the essay
Your essay should contain only as much description or synopsis as is necessary to
make your point. (Remember, I have read these works, too!)
Your essay should follow the logic of your thesis statement from one topic sentence to
the next. Your topic sentences should correlate to the reasons for supporting your
thesis statement.
Each reason for supporting your thesis statement should, in turn, be supported with
direct textual evidence, in the form of paraphrases or quotations, from your sources.
Textual evidence supports reasons, which in turn validate thesis statements. Be sure to
use a consistent method of citing your sources.
This is an analytical essay, not a research essay, so there is no requirement to find
outside sources.
You may write an essay about any of the works of drama, poetry, or fiction that we
read this term. You may write about the films, but only in regard to the works we read
(that is, you cannot only write about the films).
