Epidemiologists are called upon frequently to translate numbers into meaningful narratives for their readers. You will be asked to calculate various measures and rates in future assignments and discussions.

Look at this discussion as an opportunity to start practicing skills that you will use throughout this course and in your future career pursuits.

Preparation

Make sure you have completed the assigned readings from Introduction to Epidemiology for this week. This discussion activity will ask you to complete mortality rate calculations based on information from Chapter 10.

Discussion Activity

Review Table 10.5: Selected Statistics for a Hypothetical Population on page 219.

After reviewing the table, complete the following for your graded discussion:

• Select two of the potential mortality rates referenced in question 2 on page 219. Use the information in Table 10.5 to calculate those two different mortality rates.
• After you have calculated your two different mortality rates, address the following:
  • How did you calculate the rate?
  • What does the mortality rate mean?
  • How could you use this information in public health to make informed decisions about if any actions or interventions are needed?
