The elements of a computer-based acquisition system are:

Computer (PC) is needed to load data acquisition software enabling analysis and display of the data.

Transducer, converts signals from one form to another. Specifically here converting the signal into electrical waveforms for easy signal processing. 

Signal conditioning circuitry, manipulates signals into a form suitable to read for input in the system. Some DAS have built in signal conditioning. 

Analog to digital converters, which convert conditioned sensor signals or voltage/current to digital information. The conversion is necessary to enable the computer to process or store the signals. Many data acquisition systems can only read digital signals. 

DAS Software, controls the operation of the device, and is used for processing and storing data. The software interacts with the data acquisition system and any applications or interfaces to be used with it. 

NASA uses a DAS. The software is designed to control many aspects of rocket engine testing. It combines real time data visualization, data recording in multiple formats and short term/long term acquisition system calibration capabilities. Accommodating test facilities and test program variability.
