Coconut and Pandanus and both have many uses as an integral part of life. Paper Mulberry is used to make tapa cloth for ceremonies and worn by men and women. Staple food crops are sweet potato  taro, yam, hue  and Pacific Cabbage Tree. Seabirds and smaller landbirds and two species of fish have evolved in the local area. · Tourism contributes to 70% of the GDP in the Cook Islands and the population on Rarotonga is roughly 11,000 and in 2018 visitors numbered about 168,000 without adequate means to handle the human waste of that many people with a majority of sanitation supplied by septic systems on coral sand shelfs leach runs off of the small island into the lagoons. The resulting algae blooms have poisoned the fish for human consumption and has driven locals from traditional lifestyles in order to host the tourism trade. (Kessler, (2019) Three-fourths of the population have moved away to have work.  (Alexeyeff, 2009)
