After reviewing all of the data here please analyze the information with regard to the number of families that owned slaves in 1860. What does this information indicate as to the argument by the South that the Civil War was necessary to protect their way of life? How does this information line up with what you have been taught previously and how does this information affect your opinion regarding the actual number of families that owned slaves?  Remember to use proper citations and footnotes.
