Plagiarism

Every morning I jump out of bed and step on a landmine. The landmine is me. After the explosion, I spend the rest of the day putting pieces together. ~ Ray Bradbury, Zen in the Art of Writing, p. ix

For our first graded discussion board assignment, your job is to test your colleague's knowledge of plagiarism. To do this, you will post two things:

1) An original quote of not more than one sentence, with author's name and title of work

2) A sentence you write that refers to that quote, as you would if you referred to it in an academic paper. So far the submissions I've seen haven't been meeting the second requirement. If you're unclear, feel free to ask.

Remember:

  • You must use “quotes” if you copy five or more words exactly.
  • You should not cite information that everyone knows.
  • Try to paraphrase information.
  • Even paraphrased info should be cited if it is new to you.
  • To cite, put the author's last name and the page number in ( ). (Use APA formatting)
  • Notice that the period goes at the end of the citation.
