Philosophy
The first draft is a partial draft, just to get you to start writing. It needs to be 3 pages long, double spaced.
The final draft should be at least 5 pages double spaced. But it could be up to 8. Just be sure that you answer the question in a way that a peer, who has not read these books or been part of our class, could understand.
Present one of the two alternative conceptions of the soul (presented by Cebes or Simmias) in the Phaedo, be sure to explain how it supports the claim that the soul is mortal, and then present the basic structure of Socrates’s response to it. What is Thrasymachus’s view of justice? And what is Glaucon’s reformulated defense of it? Be sure to talk about how it builds the defense of Thrasymachus’s inversion of value on the point of common agreement between Thrasymachus and popular opinion. How does Theaetetus’s first definition of knowledge get filled out by the addition of Protagoras’s mensura and Heraclitus’s doctrine of flux? Be sure to speak about how they ensure the fact that knowledge is of what is and that knowledge in unerring. Finally, what are two arguments against Theaetetus’s first definition?
