Around the world people are experiencing disasters some man made and others natural. Disasters occur suddenly and unexpectedly, however, communities can be helped to be prepared, respond to, and recover from disasters. As nurses, it is important that we know the disasters our community are at risk for and actions to take should they occur. 

Identify a disaster that your community is at risk for or has experienced and discuss the role of the nurse in phases of prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. You can visit your states emergency management agency (ex. www.msema.gov ) to learn more about disasters that your community has the potential for occurring.  Discuss the effects of the disaster on the people, as well as the disaster workers, and their community.  Describe how community groups and other organizations such as the American Red Cross work together in preparation for, responding to, and recovering from the disaster.
