Citing Sources

Avoiding plagiarism is one of your most important jobs as a writer. For any work in this course you must always cite your sources using in-text citations and a reference list regardless of whether you are creating a table/grid, fact sheet, testimony, statement, presentation, discussion, paper, etc., to avoid plagiarism.

To accurately cite your sources, use these guidelines:

1. No citation and no quotation marks imply the sentence contains your own ideas and wording. If you observed that chocolate is better than hard candy, and this is not based on someone else’s data, you would write, with no citation:

Chocolate is better than hard candy.

2. A citation with no quotation marks implies the ideas came from a second source, but the wording belongs to you. If you read about Hershey’s promotion in a book by Johnny Depp, but you did not use Depp’s wording, you would write:

Hershey's decided to promote its chocolate using product placement (Depp, 2004).

3. A citation, page number, and quotation marks imply both the ideas and wording came from a second source. If Depp’s wording was so perfect that you don’t want to change it, write:

"The use of Hershey’s chocolate in the movie Chocolate caused a 58% rise in profits in 2000" (Depp, 2004, p. 28).

Be sure to use citations to avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism information can be found in Course Information or the Code of Conduct in the Student Handbook. Be sure to use a Safe Assign draft prior to submitting your assignments. The citation and reference documents in Doc Sharing will help. At least 2-3 course resources are required. An Advocacy Campaign for Decreasing Teen Tobacco Use

Do NOT include an abstract. Indent paragraphs ½ inch. Be sure to include the purpose statement in the introduction. The purpose statement must be clear, such as, “The purpose of this paper is to present teen tobacco use as a population health problem and discuss why the legal age to purchase tobacco products should be 21 years old. The paper will also present a grid with a tobacco bill. The reader should know what to expect in the paper from reading the purpose statement.

This should be an introduction to the problem. Facts are needed.

Tobacco use is primarily started during adolescence age. Over 3,200 children and 2,100 teens become new smokers, and 30% of that adolescent will become addicted to tobacco (Knickman & Kovner, 2015). About 18% of high school students smoke a cigarette, and over 8 million adolescent young males reported the use of smokeless tobacco (American Cancer Society, 2012). Tobacco use is the largest preventable cause of death and disease in the United States (CDC, 2016). Smoking of tobacco causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, and reproductive effects like low birth weight. The economic impact of tobacco use and smoking-related illness in the United States costs more than $300 billion each year (CDC, 2016).

Be sure to use at least 2-3 course resources and 2 outside resources in this section. At least three sentences are needed for a paragraph. Explain how the social determinants of income, age, education, or gender affect this legislation.

Addressing Opponents

Opponents are concerned about loss of business. Even if opponents were not identified, there will be some who are concerned if the bill has a cost. Helping one group of people may cause problems in another group of people.

Conclusion

Be sure to add a short conclusion. This is an APA paper.

The title above the first paragraph must be exactly the same as the one on the title page. APA does not use Introduction as a heading. Personal pronouns, like we, you, he, she, are not used in APA. An occasional I statement is accepted. Do not add extra spaces between sections. See APA for level one headings. Contractions are not used in APA. The entire paper should be double-spaced, and written in Times New Roman, 12 font. That includes the references. To create double spacing, highlight and push CTRL 2.
