Homer. The Iliad. Translated by Robert Fagles, Penguin Classics, 1998.
This translation of The Iliad by Robert Fagles presents a modern and accessible rendition of the ancient Greek epic. Fagles' version is renowned for its readability and poetic quality, making it suitable for both classroom study, and general an easy read. I will be using different quotes from these works, to support my analysis of Achilles' characterization, motives, and relevance to the epic. In my exploring Achilles' character, I aim to highlight his role as a symbol of the warrior ethos and his internal conflict between personal glory and honor.
Homer. The Odyssey. Translated by Robert Fagles, Penguin Classics, 1996.
Robert Fagles' translation of The Odyssey tells Odysseus' story in a way that feels modern and interesting. Fagles' writing shows us who Odysseus is and why he does what he does, giving us a deeper understanding of his journey back home. I intend to cite passages from this translation to support my discussion of Odysseus' resilience and cunning, contrasting his journey with Achilles' quest for glory in The Iliad.
Manguel, Alberto. Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey: A Biography. Atlantic Books, 2007.
Alberto Manguel's book provides a detained examination of both The Iliad and The Odyssey, offering insights into the background, themes, and characters of these epic poems. Manguel's analysis will enlighten my understanding of Achilles and Odysseus, by doing so, helping me to explore their characters, motives, and relevance within the context of ancient Greek epic poetry in greater depth. This work will help me be able to provide a broader perspective on the themes of heroism and human nature in Homer's epics. Bring together and supporting my thesis on the contrasting aspects of heroism represented by Achilles and Odysseus.
