· The narrator starts out mildly anxious but becomes paranoid and obsessed as the story progresses.
· Her husband, John, controls every part of her life, including her thoughts, treatment, and physical space.
· The more she is isolated and ignored, the more her sense of self falls apart.
Topic Sentence 2:
The wallpaper serves as a symbol of the narrator’s trapped mind and the restrictions placed on women in society.
· The tangled, ugly pattern reflects the narrator’s mental confusion and feeling of being stuck.
· She imagines a woman trapped behind the wallpaper, symbolizing herself and other women in her position.
· Tearing down the wallpaper becomes her way of fighting back against her oppression.
Topic Sentence 3:
By combining the narrator’s characterization and the wallpaper’s symbolism, Gilman critiques how society’s treatment of women’s mental health can cause real harm.
· The “rest cure” treatment ignores the narrator’s real needs and leads to a breakdown.
· No one listens to her when she says she’s not getting better, showing how women’s voices were silenced.
· Gilman uses this story to push back against a system that traps women instead of helping them heal.
Closing Sentence
