Develop an essay of 1000 words. Be sure to argue a particular point of view in your essay (your thesis) and cite varied examples from the readings in MLA format in order to support your perspective. Include a works cited page. Additional MLA information can be found in the week's readings. Please submit your essay to the assignment section of the course. This assignment is worth 15% of your final grade.

Select one of the following topics as the focus for your essay:
 

1. Discuss Conrad's criticism of Imperialism in Heart of Darkness and the relevance of his criticisms to contemporary society.
    
2. Discuss how Woolf's own experiences shaped her depiction of female characters and how Woolf contributed to contemporary feminism? Use examples from the literature assigned for this course, "The Mark on the Wall" and/ or "A Room of One's Own," to defend your position.
    
3. To what extent does “The Garden Party” counter the historical views of women of the time? How do the feminist elements of the story relate to contemporary society? Use examples from the literature to defend your argument.
