Latin American Foreign Policy
Most scholars of US-Latin American relations have pointed to the hegemonic role of the United States in the hemisphere, particularly since the start of the 20th Century. They have alluded to Latin America’s limited agency or autonomy in shaping the regional international system, much less the global arena. However, since the end of the Cold War, there are discernible trends that show that at least some countries have acquired quite a bit of agency in pushing back on the US and acting with greater autonomy in hemispheric and global affairs. Answer the following questions:
1. What explains greater levels of autonomy in Latin American foreign policy? How is Latin America shaping hemispheric/global affairs in ways that are not necessarily consistent with US interests?
2. What are the areas of change and continuity in US-Latin American relations since the end of World War II?
