Hello everyone,

Part I:

My name is Coleen Morton, and I am from St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. I currently work as a Human Resource Coordinator, and in that role, I have gained experience with employee relations, workplace processes, compliance, and the day-to-day responsibilities that support an organization’s workforce. Working in human resources has given me a better understanding of how important it is for employees to feel valued and supported. My future goal is to continue growing in the field of human resource management, strengthen my leadership skills, and move into higher-level HR roles as I continue my education and professional development.

Part II:

When I look at job options, the top three compensation factors that influence my decision are salary, health benefits, and retirement or long-term financial security. Salary is important to me because it directly affects my ability to manage my financial responsibilities and maintain stability. It is also a reflection of how an employer values the work, skills, and contributions of its employees. Health benefits are another major factor because having quality coverage can make a significant difference in both personal well-being and financial protection. Retirement benefits and other long-term compensation options are also important to me because it is necessary to think beyond immediate income and consider future stability.

These factors are different from what they may have been for me five years ago because my priorities have changed over time. Earlier on, I would have focused more on the paycheck itself and whether the salary was enough to meet my immediate needs. Now, I pay much closer attention to the full compensation package because I understand that compensation is not just about what you earn today, but also about the support and security a position offers over time. A job may offer a higher salary, but if the benefits are weak or there is little long-term support, it may not be the best overall opportunity.

I believe several changes have impacted on my top three compensation factors. One major change is the rising cost of living, which has made salary even more important because everyday expenses continue to increase. Another is the rising cost of healthcare, which makes strong health benefits much more valuable than they may have seemed in the past. I also think that personal and professional growth has played a role. As I have gained more experience and taken on greater responsibilities, I have become more aware of how important long-term planning and financial security really are. Overall, my compensation interests have changed because my perspective, responsibilities, and goals have all evolved over time.
