3) Essay # 2 (Document Analysis, 20% of the final mark): By the beginning of the class  you will submit through the Moodle an analysis of one of the following historical documents:

2. Gustave Freensen, In the German South African Army, 1903-1904

3. Proclamation of the Young Turks, 1908 and The Program of NSDAP,1920

4. German Diplomatic Reports on Mass Killings of Armenians, 1915-1916

5. The Wannsee Conference Protocols, 1942

6. Hermann Friedrich Graebe, Account of Holocaust Mass Shootings, 1942, Rudolf Hoess, Testimony at Nuremberg, 1946 and Julie Heifetz, Confessions, 1982

7. Resolution on Grain Procurements in Ukraine, Northern Caucuses and Western Oblast’, 1932

8. NKVD’s Operational Order, 1937

9. Order for the Katyn Massacre, 1940

10. Deportation of the Crimean Tatars, 1944

In your work on this assignment, you should follow the same document analysis guidelines that are uploaded to the Moodle in a separate file. Your essay should be appropriately footnoted and should cite at least four relevant secondary sources of scholarly nature (books, book chapters, journal articles, but not websites!)

Some stylistic rules to follow:

Avoid excesses of language and judgment as well as meaningless comments (e.g. ‘this is a most interesting document’). Be more creative in expressing what makes the document unique or intriguing. Do not use personal pronouns and adjectives (‘I’,‘me’, ‘we’, ‘my’). Type your document analysis essay double-spaced, using 12-point font. Word length: 1200 – 1500.
