History Discussion
Purpose: Last week, I asked you to consider how social changes in the colonies might cause anxiety for the Crown, and this week we'll look at things from the other perspective: how the diverse peoples we're been reading about were affected by the sistema de castas. As we'll see, growing discontent from various colonial sectors would soon become an important factor in the beginning the Wars for Independence.
Task: cite evidence from Martínez, Sousa, or Vinson III to discuss how Indigenous or Afrodescendant castas lost out in the sistema de castas. How, specifically, did it work against them? According to what logic?
