This essay assignment is a primary source analysis on The Foundry Engineering Works of the Overseas Trading Company, Factory Rules .

In your essay on Factory Rules, you are required to read the primary source.  The textbook and online materials also provide helpful background information for the essay.  

Your essay needs a brief introduction and critical analysis in comprehensive paragraphs with a minimum of 300 words.  It should be based on your primary source reading and it needs to demonstrate your analysis of the documents.  Three or more specific in-text source citations are expected and required.  

Please consider the following questions when you write the essay:

1. The tone - it seems a little harsh from a modern perspective, but was it?
2. Use of words like "overseer," "obey," and "gatekeeper." What do those words convey?
3. The length of the work day.  
4. Bathroom breaks, rule 10 - what do you make of them?
5. The likely impact such rules would have on the life of the individual.
