Description

Based upon the readings, PowerPoint lectures, and in-class group discussions concerning the topic of single-sex colleges, you will research and develop a formal research paper using the writing prompt below.

Develop and sustain an argument stance. Analyze arguments. Synthesize ideas.

Requirements/Writing Prompt

You are writing and developing a formal research paper based upon the following writing prompt:

Women's colleges, once common in the United States, have been going coeducational in increasing numbers in the past 40 years. Many people argue that women's colleges are unnecessary now that all of the major United States colleges and universities are open to women, but others, citing studies that show that graduates of women's colleges are more successful than women who graduate from coed colleges, argue that women's colleges still have much to offer. Are single-sex colleges obsolete, or do they still provide an important alternative to coed colleges? Support your position with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.—Source, Critierion.org, ETS

You will need to develop a stance and sustain the argument throughout your paper. You must also incorporate the arguments and counterarguments on the topic, using the reference sources housed on eCampus. Critique these arguments based upon your stance.

You will create the following sections.

The goal of this assignment is to think critically about the arguments, not just provide a summary on the topic at large, AND make a case .

Literature Review	75	For this section, you are summarizing the arguments on the topic and providing an analysis of those arguments. Your goal is two-part. Goal #1: Summarize the following: You are creating 3 SEPARATE paragraphs. 1) Harvard Political Review article, 2) one school that still remains a single-sex college (i.e., Mt. Holyoke), and 3) one school that was originally a single-sex college, but became coeducational (i.e., Vassar). Create paragraphs for each of the source materials. Use MLA. Goal #2: Choose one to three arguments from any of the sources above to critique/analyze. Use MLA. Create an additional 4th paragraph. By the end of this Literature Review section , you should have at least 4 total paragraphs. The links are available on eCampus. You may choose any school for a single-sex college still in existence and any school for a single-sex college that became coeducational. Sources: HPR, SS College, SS to Coed College
The Case for Transgender Students	25	Based upon the arguments presented from the single-sex colleges and in considering the Title IX legislation, make a case for either accepting or rejecting transgender students. You will not be penalized for personal views, but you must use evidence and provide sound arguments, including rebuttals. You must use at least one of the source materials from the transgender links on eCampus. Quote directly. Cite appropriately. Sources: 1 transgender source
Conclusion	10	Summarize the paper and propose new suggestions.
MLA	30	All in-text citations must be properly formatted according to MLA.
Works Cited	10	This should be the last page of your paper. It must be formatted properly.
Argument	15	You must sustain your argument. Be sure to include rebuttals where appropriate.
TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE	250	All elements of the above rows must be reflected within the paper to receive consideration for full points. See the Note on Grading section for additional information.

The length requirement for this assignment is 5 to 8 pages. If you choose 5 pages, you need a full 5th page . You will need to format the document for MLA and add a Works Cited list as the last page of your essay. Please refer to previous notes, handouts, and MLA Topics (Videos) on eCampus for information about how to cite in-text and at the end of your essay and how to format the full document. By this time in the semester, you should know how to format for MLA.

You MUST use the required source materials where appropriate, which are available as links on eCampus under the “PowerPoint Lectures” tab. You are formatting entries primarily for web based.

You may research additional materials. You may use additional materials from previous readings. Format additional sources when and where appropriate using MLA. There is no limit to additional sources. However, you still must use the required sources.

Additional Note on Grading

This paper requires quote integration within all sections, excluding the Introduction and the Conclusion. You may choose to place quotes in those sections, but you are not required to do so.

In addition, points will be deducted for plagiarized content, particularly where there is no clear attempt by you to cite the source. Deduction of points is at the instructor’s discussion. Considering the severity of plagiarism, you may fail the paper, which may contribute to you failing the course.

Missing sections will receive a deduction based upon the point distribution already indicated in the table.

Missing elements from a section will be deducted by 10 points for each.

Missing source material will be deducted by 10 points for each. These are direct quotes and source material referencing (i.e., paraphrases). You need a citation at the end of quotes and paraphrased material. Missing pages will be deducted by 10 points for each. You cannot provide a half-page for the last page of the essay. However, three-quarters or a full page, of course, may be acceptable. Instructor’s discretion applies.

If you write on a completely different topic than the one outlined within this English Assignment Sheet, then you will receive an automatic zero (0), without consideration, on this assignment. There may not be an opportunity to revise the paper. If you plagiarize whole content, you will receive a zero on this assignment. Plan carefully.
