The most important task God can give
is the opportunity to be a parent.
This book is dedicated to my wife Monica
for sharing the process with me
and to Kimberly, Karla, and Craig
for the satisfaction gained from being a father.
Being a parent and the opportunity to be a grandparent
to Kara, Kristen, Travis, Julia, Ali, and Jolie
are much more important than writing a book.

Assignemnt7tips.docx
We are on week 7
1. I have included the week 7 template
2. These are the two clients you will be using for the assignment.
3. I attached my week five assignment which has the client's diagnosis I gave each client and I guess it gives an idea of what angle I was going in with the client.
4. She wants us to choose counseling theories that are in chapters 5-7
5. When you log in the side panel has a tab called Reading List click there and under Week 5 Goal Setting is where you can find the child/adolescent psycho therapy treatment plan.
Clients
Sarah
Sarah is a five year old Hispanic female in kindergarten. She has a twin sister Esther, and they are very close in their sibling relationship. They still sleep in the same bed together even though they each have their own bedroom. Until recently, they did not have friends, choosing to play only with each other. When Sarah and Esther entered Kindergarten, the school placed them in separate classes. Although Esther transitioned without issue and quickly made friends, Sarah has not. She has not spoken since the first week of school. Her relationship with her sister has deteriorated. Sarah spends her free time hiding under her bed, drawing or holding her dolls.
Sarah’s parents thought it was a phase and she would adjust, but when Esther had a sleep over with her new friends, Sarah ran away. Her parents searched the neighborhood and could not find her. After an hour, they called the police. The police searched the neighborhood and they finally found her in the park.
Edward
Edward is a 12-year old Korean boy in the 6th grade. He is shy and often keeps to himself. Teachers expressed concerned to his parents because Edward chose to read during PE rather than engage with his classmates in games and activities. Since winter break, however Edward is like a different adolescent. He disrupts class by making noises, dancing in the halls, and mocking the teacher.
Edward’s parents report that he mocks his sister when she cries and then laughs at her when she cries harder. The shift in personality happened quickly according to the parents. As far as discipline, the parents report “nothing helps.” The school recommended an alternative learning center for the remainder of the term.
Although they are supportive of the school, they are concerned about Edward losing Robotics Club as it is the one place where he has friends. When the parents explain to Edward what it means to be sent to an alternative learning center, he becomes very upset and promises to do better the next day. Unfortunately, he does not. When asked about his behaviors at school, he refuses to talk about it.

This a note from the teacher about the previous assignment (that is like this assignment) that the class made a mistake on :
I hope that everyone had a good weekend. In reviewing the assignments there were 2 main issues that I saw across the board:
1. Some of you listed complex short-term goals either were actually interventions or went on too long and included interventions. Remember that long term goals are the larger, more broad outcomes the therapist and client are working for, while short term goals are the smaller, achievable steps that make up a long term goal. They should be related and talk about the change that will occur, but you do not have to go into detail about how that change will occur in the goals. Interventions are the techniques, exercises, interventions, etc., that will be applied in order to work toward each goal. In the treatment planner, the long term goals, short term objectives/goals, and interventions all are broken up into different categories. I do want an explanation of why/how you'd use a specific intervention in this week's assignment.
2. I also noticed a trend where many learners were too abstract in the legal and ethical considerations. This is not a space to talk about the legal and ethical concerns that you have as a counselor. They should be specific and relevant to EACH client case. What ethical and legal concerns would you have when working with this client and their family based on their presenting concerns and background? Concerns about abuse, violence towards others, impact of running away, ethical and religious differences, working with school administration? Try to be grounded in the reality of what’s presented and not as abstract.
This week we’ll be diving deeper into developing theory-based interventions for clients. So we’ll be taking the next step from case conceptualization to using theory to shape not only how we view clients, but also how we plan to treat their issues. As you move forward, keep in mind that the specific interventions you choose should be a reflection of the theories/lens through which you view clients and their issues.
For this week’s assignment, you will be taking the same clients from week 5’s assignment and choosing theories and interventions for their treatment. Please read the assignment instructions and criteria carefully. I will be looking for your interventions to be tied to the theories that you chose for your clients. For the purposes of this assignment, you should be choosing counseling theories from chapters 5-7 ( not developmental theories) and I do not recommend choosing person centered therapy as one of your theories as it does not have many prescribed interventions . Additionally, they should be specific interventions ( saying that you will use CBT with a client is not enough. What specific intervention tied to CBT will you use and what symptom are you working to address?).
Example of an individual intervention: Role Play The counselor will use puppets with Sarah as a behavioral approach to role-play different scenarios and “teach the client social skills and reduce social anxiety” (Jongsma, 2014). This technique will be helpful in gradually exposing Sarah to social situations and equipping her with the skills necessary to cope with her emotions and interact with others.
You should also have different interventions for each client as they all have different issues that need to be addressed, write in complete full sentences, and cite your sources throughout the assignment. I highly recommend the case conceptualization book as well as the psychotherapy treatment planners on the course reading list if you haven’t already used them. They are one of my most practical and highly used resources that I have as a clinician. Also, as you are finding peer reviewed articles to support your work, be sure they are applicable to the issues your clients are dealing with. I don’t want you searching for articles just to say you did. I will be around if you have any questions about the material but not able to respond quickly on the weekend. Please reach out if you have any needs or concerns. Take care!
Best,
Dr. Harris
