OTAP 1350 Clinical Condions II Applying Theories to a Short Story

Objecve: The purpose of this acvity is to ulized Bloom’s Taxonomy level IV & V to assist students in examining and supporng their knowledge and understanding of the various Frames of Reference (FoR) within the OT profession. This process helps the students process what they have learned and analyze the informaon at different levels.

Instrucons:

Aer the class session where frames of references (FoR) are discussed and learned, students are to write a brief short story of a me in their childhood. The story should be about an event that happened in their past, individually, with a sibling, or with a relaonship, etc. It could be a funny story or about a me they learned a lesson.

Next, students are to write a summary of the situaon from the point of view of two FoR. The students should point out the key concepts regarding the parcular theories and how it relates to their short story.

This assignment will help guide the students to beer understand and be able to contrast the differences between each FoR discussed throughout the course by looking at their story through different perspecves.

**Grading: Each submission will be graded based on the comparison of the key components for that specific FoR to the student’s short story.

B.2.1 Apply scienfic evidence, theories, models of pracce, and frames of reference that underlie the pracce of occupaonal therapy to guide and inform intervenons for persons, groups, and populaons in a variety of pracce contexts and environments.

Choose any 2 FoR to compare and analyze how they are linked to your specific short story wrien above. Grading will be based on how student links the key concepts of the 2 chosen FoR’s below to their specific story.

50% = aempted but did not correctly link any listed concept to the provided story for their 2 chosen FoRs

75% = vague or not clearly linked to concepts listed above OR missed the link of 1 FoR but vaguely linked the 2nd FoR

89% = was able to minimally link to key concept(s) of each of the 2 chosen FoR’s OR linked well for 1 FoR and not so well to the other FoR

100% = thoroughly linked the 2 chosen FoR’s to various key concepts listed above.

Focus on ROM, strength, and endurance; work on prerequisite skills to increase funconal skills● Body must be rested then stressed● Must have intact brain that can produce isolated and coordinated movements● Prevent deformity or contractures; reduce pain, swelling, or scarring●

Use of adapve techniques, compensatory strategies, environmental modificaons to engage in occupaons● Use of orthocs, adapve procedures, educaon, and safety to increase independence● Client factors, performance skills, and paerns may not be able to be restored●

Synergies and reflexes that occur early in development are also a normal part of recovery for a paent with hemiplegia. Uses the paent’s motor paerns available to them in the recovery.

These synergies should be facilitated and used during treatment. (6 stages of motor recovery)●

A neurological approach in which motor paerns are facilitated and normalized through the applicaon of sensory smulaon to specific sensory receptors (sensory sm can elicit specific motor responses)

Normal muscle tone is a prerequisite to movement● Treatment begins at the developmental level of funconing● Movaon enhance performance● Repeon is necessary for reeducaon of muscular responses●

Used aer severe cognive deficits following a brain injury● Task-specific training: repeon of task/roune in natural contexts to develop habits or funconal behaviors● Compensatory techniques & repeve pracces; cognive overlearning●

Focuses on CNS disorders & is a neurophysiological approach; uses reflex supports to assist with voluntary movements● Smulaon of the proprioceptors to prevent or correct muscle imbalances for normal movement and posture● Diagonal paerns and techniques were established; core stabilizaon, & recovery from sports injuries● Developmental sequence of motor movement (head to toe progression)●

Looks at the person’s skills and abilies across the physical, social and emoonal spectrum ● Considers the person to be unique with their own set of values, beliefs, and goals● Considers the person to be intrinsically movated● States the person’s environment & context influence the person and occupaon ● It focuses EQUALLY on changing Person, Environment and Occupaon to promote funcon where other models may focus on one areas more so that another
