Student Support Planning Worksheet
Scenario 1: Alex – Language Processing Challenges
Alex is a seventh-grade student with a language processing disorder. He excels in hands-on science activities but struggles to follow multi-step verbal instructions and has difficulty expressing his understanding in writing. His teacher, Ms. Rivera, often uses whole-class discussions and written lab reports to assess learning. Alex is expected to read complex texts and respond to open-ended questions in writing.
Based on what you know about Ms. Rivera’s class:
1. List at least three areas where Alex might experience difficulty.
2. List at least three accommodations that could be used to address the barriers related to Alex’s disability (see Common Accommodations and Modifications in School). Include the accommodations category and explain how these accommodations might help Alex access and demonstrate his learning.
3. Based on the accommodations recommended above, give Ms. Rivera tips to ensure that Alex receives the maximum benefit. Suggest two to three teaching strategies (refer to the Effective Instructional Strategies section of CH. 2 of your Strategies text) that can support Alex and explain why you chose each strategy.
4. Explain how the selected accommodations align with principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and evidence-based practice.
