This project is designed to give you the chance to make your own relief print. You will produce one or
more original relief prints from a simple “stamp” that you create yourself. The image must be a letter from
our English alphabet that is NOT symmetrical, i.e., not O, M, W, T, etc. This requirement is so that you
will have to plan the image in reverse before carving and printing.
You will need to document your process by taking several digital photos throughout your process. See
below for samples of what to do.
· Various materials found around the house are suitable for creating the relief (a potato, a block eraser, thick cardboard, etc.)
· Carving/cutting tools might be a small kitchen paring knife or an X-acto knife.
· Your “ink” could be a form of water soluble paint, such as tempera, watercolor, acrylic, or gouache. You will not need much paint, and you do not need to invest a great deal of money in the paint you buy. You might even try something more non-traditional for your “ink.”
· Your printing substrate (the surface you are printing on) may be thick paper, cloth or something of similar thickness. Please do not use ruled notebook paper!
· Attempt several prints, one of which should create a simple repetitive pattern.
· Take at least five digital photos of the process (I have provided a few examples below). You must include images of the following:
· Your tools and materials laid out before you start
· The carved stamp before you “ink” it
· The carved stamp after you “ink” it
· A photo of one of your finished prints
· An image of you holding your finished print
·
· Create a response for this assignment that includes the four pictures of your process as well as one of yourself holding your finished print in your response so I can give you a grade for the assignment. Remember to embed the images in your response!
· For more info, just Google “potato printing.”
Use at least five images (listed above) to illustrate your response. In order to receive full credit, the images of the works must be INSERTED/EMBEDDED IN (not attached to) your journal post, and the works must be fully identified.
