CASE STUDY – Part 1

As soon as you opened the door to the gym, you kicked yourself. Of course the place was packed at 9:00 on a Saturday morning. Your original goal was to be here no later than 7:00, but then Jill wanted to talk, and – fine, you’ll come back later, when the crowd cleared.

Meanwhile – hey, you haven’t seen Aunt Pat in a while, and she lives pretty close. Always good for a cup of coffee and maybe those special pancakes...?

The coffee, pancakes, and sausage were as good as ever, but Aunt Pat and Uncle Hugh seemed a little down. Hugh, seeing your workout clothes, even said, “Remember when we had things to do on Saturdays, Pat?”

“Sure,” she answered, “but I can’t see us going to the gym.” They laughed, but suddenly her remark got you thinking.

“Why not?” you asked, seriously.

It boiled down to lack of confidence, fear, and – as Hugh put it – “I just can’t see working so hard at it. I’d rather do something fun.”

As you drove home, you wondered... Every week, there was something on the news about how out of shape most Americans are. Most people in their 50s and 60s, like Pat and Hugh, had never gotten into the workout habit, so they would probably never go to the gym. How else could they get a workout, enjoy it, and spend time with friends? Was there a seed of an idea here for a business?

Do some thinking and some research. How might an entrepreneur address the idea of easy, fun physical activity for seniors? Don’t just list existing ideas but rather try to be really creative and come up with something brand new. Aim for five ideas interesting enough that you yourself could get excited about them. Use the provided template to guide your thinking and record your ideas.
