Deviance

For this assignment, I would like you to consider the concept of deviance. First, be sure to define deviance and formally cite in this paper. Next, describe a deviant act you have either been involved in or witnessed first-hand. Be sure only to address something you would be comfortable sharing and that the act wouldn’t get you into any trouble for disclosing it. After describing the act, address what the social norms are and why this act is deviant. Examples will be addressed in class as well as the due date. This paper should be a minimum of one page and in APA format.

If you are uncomfortable with the first part of this assignment or simply want a choice, you can spend an afternoon doing something deviant and writing about the reactions you notice. For example, I once went to speak to my academic advisor and rather than sit at the desk when she invited me in I sat on the floor with my legs crossed. Rather than draw attention to it, she brought a note pad and sat with me to take notes about my concerns and engaged in general conversation. When I informed her about what I did and why, she laughed. She also informed me she wanted to make me feel comfortable and it was important to her to not acknowledge the act so she didn’t scare me off. For the afternoon, you could do something like this or I can provide some examples in class. Be sure to record the reactions and be prepared to discuss these in class. The format is the same as the above assignment.
