Field Experience Hours
Completion of the Case Study and the accompanying 10-hour Field Experience is a mandatory requirement for all students. These components are directly linked and represent the most important assignment of the course.
Note: If you do not complete the required Field Experience Hours and submit your Case Study in Canvas (Portfolio), you cannot receive a passing gradefor this course.
Follow the steps below to fulfill this requirement:
- Self-Placement Required: You are responsible for recruiting an ESOL learner within your local community (e.g., neighbors, local schools, community centers, or tutoring programs).
- Parental Permission: You must obtain written parental approval before working with any student. Click here to access the permission form template. Download Click here to access the permission form template.
- Instructional Time: You may choose to develop a single comprehensive lesson plan with multiple components or several shorter lesson plans that total 10 hours of instructional time.
- Record Your Hours: Record your hours by logging the dates and total hours dedicated to working with your ESOL learner for the Case Study. Include detailed descriptions of the activities and tasks completed during your fieldwork.
- Use the provided Attendance Log template Download Attendance Log templateto document both your hours and your written reflections on each session.
- Submit your completed log and comments through the Field Experience Hours (Portfolio) folder in Canvas. Double-check that all entries are accurate and complete.
- Your Attendance Log must be signed by a parent or guardian to verify your hours. Upload the signed Attendance Log form with your final submission.
- Complete Your Case Study: Follow all assignment instructions and guideline when completing your Case Study. Watch the instructional video in the Case Study folder for detailed guidance.
Reminder: These field experience hours are mandated by the Florida Department of Education. Accuracy and detail in your log and reflections are essential.
Submission Requirements
To receive credit for the Field Experience and Case Study, you must complete the Field Experience Form with detailed information about your teaching experience with the ESOL student. Then, upload the following items to the Field Experience Hours (Portfolio) folder in Canvas:
- The signed Attendance Log form
