An assessment of communication skills is a critical area included in a core assessment battery for the diagnosis of ASD. This project has two parts to complete in order to obtain full credit.

Part 1: Assessment Considerations Chart

In this part of the Project, you will examine specific components of communication that are typically assessed when evaluating the communication skills of a child with autism. A communication assessment for a child with ASD often includes looking at: joint attention, symbol use, communicative intent, expressive and receptive language, and social skills. You will analyze the purpose of assessing each of these components of communication, as well as both formal and informal assessment tools and techniques that can be utilized when evaluating these specific components. Please use the template provided to you for the chart.

Part 2: Essay

For Part 2 of this Project, you will write a 1-2 page informative essay in which

You will:

•Examine and discuss how language and social skills can be assessed.

•Compare different assessment strategies that may be utilized to assess language and social skills in young children with autism.

• Indicate how assessment findings can be used to plan intervention for a child with autism.

Your essay should include:
