Lesson 5: Utilizing the Marketing Mix to Form a New Strategy
To meet their customers' growing and changing needs, marketers must make sure that they offer the right product, at the right price, with the right promotions, and that the product is easily accessible for purchase. When building a marketing strategy, marketers must consider the strategies necessary to implement for each part of the marketing mix. These strategies are vital for innovative products to succeed in the marketplace.
Product strategy is contingent on where a product or service is in the life cycle. In the introduction stage, companies invest high amounts of capital in advertising and sales promotion at the cost of profitability to scale and grow (Gomez Albrecht et al., 2023). As products succeed in the marketplace, they enter the growth stage, characterized by investing in product development and distribution or decreased promotion to bolster profitability.
In the maturity stage, sales growth slows, but brands can invest in product improvements to enhance long-term gain (Gomez-Albrecht et al., 2023). Finally, many products enter the decline stage, characterized by the fact that the market, technology, or consumer tastes have changed. This may lead to divestment or removal of the product (Gomez Albrecht et al., 2023). The product life cycle implies that staying on top of innovation is crucial to extend the profit-generating phases.
Setting the right price for the product is essential. It is a way to convey to the customer that the customer sees value in the product at that price. If the price is high, the customer may be unable to afford it, no matter how much it is desired. If it is set low, the quality of the product may be questioned. In addition, the activities of the competitors need to be closely monitored, and their pricing strategies are tracked.
For new, innovative products, organizations also take several types of strategies. Price skimming occurs when marketers set product pricing high and reduce the price over time. This attracts people who initially pay a premium, and the other segments willing to pay less over time (Gomez Albrecht et al., 2023). Market penetration is the opposite of skimming, in which marketers set the price low to achieve as much of the market share of customers in all segments to raise the price over time. Break-even pricing is a strategy where the price is set to cover manufacturing costs. On the one hand, break-even pricing can cause a barrier to entry into competition. However, it may lead to the perception that the product or service holds less value (Chen, 2022).
The message must be clear, consistent, and compelling when promoting a product. Similar to the overarching marketing mix, there is a promotional mix that includes advertising, personal selling, sales promotion, direct marketing, and digital marketing.
Advertising refers to paid, nonpersonal communication, which includes commercials, billboards, radio, and even pop-up windows from a Google search. Advertising is also considered the most familiar part of the marketing mix (Gomez Albrecht et al., 2023). Sales promotion creates short-term sales increases through discounts, sweepstakes, and other tactics to get consumers to buy a product.
Personal selling is a one-on-one form of communication with a customer using a salesperson to inform or persuade a customer (Gomez Albrecht et al., 2023). It is one of the most expensive forms of promotion and provides individualized messages for one person or small groups. Direct marketing started with mail and telephone, then led to text messages and email marketing.
The newest part of the promotional mix is internet or digital marketing. Digital marketing is two-way communication between the company and the customer that uses tools such as websites, social media, widgets, and customer relationship management. Internet marketing uses websites, SMS, and mobile apps to send messages to mass audiences (Gomez-Albrecht et al., 2023).
Each element of the promotional mix should produce different results, but when combined, it should create one consistent message (Gomez Albrecht et al., 2023).
The product needs to be accessible to the customer. Where will it be available? Which retail stores will carry the product? Will it be available online? Will it be available for purchase directly from the manufacturer? These are some of the questions which need to be considered when deciding how conveniently consumers can purchase the product.
The place is defined by its distribution channels. Organizations may choose to manage them directly or indirectly. Direct channels require a firm to provide their product or service now to the consumer. On the other hand, indirect channels include an intermediary between the organization and the consumer. There are four main types of intermediaries. Agents facilitate transactions between a company and a consumer for a commission or fee. Distributors align themselves with the manufacturer and take ownership of the product, often including the brand (Gomez Albrecht et al., 2023). Retailers also take ownership of the product but focus on direct contact with the end user (Gomez Albrecht et al., 2023).
Your assignment for this lesson will require you to analyze all four parts of the marketing mix and make strategic decisions to ensure your product is successful.
